The Intern’s View: The Power of Networking

The Necessity of Networking

Every intern and college student hears it: networking isn’t optional—it’s essential. As a sophomore at the University of Michigan, I’ve seen this firsthand. Early in my career journey, I’ve faced the challenges of building a meaningful professional network. But during my first two weeks interning at Upnext, I’ve witnessed how valuable real connections can be. The people who actively grow and nurture their networks are the ones who unlock the most opportunity.

Peer Connections Matter Too

Networking isn’t just about impressing executives. For students, it’s also about connecting with peers. In college, networking looks different than it does in the corporate world. At a massive public university like mine, where hundreds apply for the same roles and clubs, surface-level interactions don’t cut it. A quick handshake or a LinkedIn connection won’t make you stand out. Instead, investing time in authentic relationships creates openings you never expected.

Coffee Chats: Low Pressure, High Value

One of the most effective and underrated forms of networking at UofM is the coffee chat. Some clubs schedule them formally, but the real value comes when you initiate them yourself. Reach out to a peer or faculty member you admire. Get to know the group you’re hoping to join—and a real person in it. That simple step shows genuine interest and can make your name stick during selection discussions.

Upperclassmen in your field also offer insights you won’t find in a course or job posting. Informal chats let you learn in a low-pressure environment while exploring new opportunities.

Start Small, Stay Consistent

Networking feels intimidating at first. That’s normal. But like any skill, it gets easier with practice. Put yourself in slightly uncomfortable situations. Reach out. Ask questions. Most people—students and professionals alike—remember what it was like to be in your shoes. Many are happy to pay it forward.
